Download Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) Stability and Reliability Refresh

It’s not often that Microsoft offers updates for software that is still in development, but the company is doing just that for the first public testing milestone of Internet Explorer 9.

Users of Internet Explorer 9 Beta, released in mid-September 2010, can boost their browsing experience up a notch with two new updates offered by the software giant.

Microsoft underlined from the get go that the new downloads are not new IE9 development builds, but that they are only designed to be installed on top of the IE9 Beta.

Following the release of IE9 Beta Build 9.0.7930.16406, users have been waiting to see whether a second Beta will follow. This has not been the case, at least for the time being.

Also, from the hints I’ve received from Microsoft, I think that it’s more likely that the IE team will go straight to IE9 Release Candidate (RC) rather than release a second Beta, per the Windows 7 and Windows Live Essentials 2011 model.

“We released a recommended update for all Internet Explorer 9 Beta customers via Windows Update (KB2448827).

“This update includes stability fixes for the beta build. It is not a new Internet Explorer 9 Beta build. Another update shipped today (KB2452648) resolves issues between the IE9 send feedback feature on 64-bit machines with Windows-Live-Essentials 11.

“These updates apply only to Internet Explorer 9 Beta,” revealed Tyson Storey, IE Program Manager.

Microsoft will be pushing both updates automatically to customers that have IE9 Beta installed.

There are quite a few, especially considering the last statistics that the company shared with the world, with more than 13 million downloads of IE9 Beta since September 15.

“Customers who have automatic updating enabled will not need to take any action because this update will be downloaded and installed automatically. Customers who have not enabled automatic updating need to check for updates and install this update manually,” Storey added.

Microsoft has unveiled the first public beta version of its new browser, Internet Explorer 9 (www.microsoft.com/ie9), and it’s packed with impressive features. With IE9, Microsoft hopes to win back some of the surfers who have abandoned the browser in favor of rivals such as Firefox and Chrome. Back in August 2008, IE was used by almost 70 per cent of surfers. Statistics published in August revealed that this figure had shrunk to 51 per cent.

Part of the reason for IE9’s fall in popularity was the introduction in March this year of an EU requirement that forced Microsoft to let Windows users choose which browser they use, rather than simply bundling IE onto all new Windows PCs. So the success of IE9, which isn’t compatible with XP (see box top right), is crucial to Microsoft if it wants to hold onto its dominance of the browser market.

Microsoft has high hopes for IE9, claiming it will make the web “a more beautiful place” by using the new HTML5 web standard. Here’s Web User’s guide to the new tools it has to offer.
Redesigned user interface

IE9 has been designed so that the screen displays as much of a website as possible and the area dedicated to browser controls is minimal. Microsoft found when observing surfers’ online behavior that the Back button was the most clicked button on any browser, so in IE9 it has been enlarged. Similarly, the company’s research showed that people rarely click the Home button, so this has been moved to the right of the window. Error messages now appear at the bottom of the window so they are less distracting.
One-box search

The address bar and search box in IE9 have been merged, with this one box now performing both tasks. When you start typing into the address bar, results from your browsing history will appear, as will search results from the web – you can choose which search engine IE9 uses to do this (Google, Bing, Yahoo and Wikipedia are the default options). This search feature can be switched on and off to protect your privacy, Microsoft said. By switching it off, your keystrokes can’t be traced for phishing purposes. You can also set the address bar to automatically send you to the top search result each time.
Tabs

Tabbed browsing is standard across most web browsers but in IE9, Microsoft aims to make it more intuitive. Now, when you open a new tab, a page of recently visited sites appears in a grid – in much the same was as it does in Opera, Chrome and Safari. Each has a ‘favicon,’ making the site instantly recognizable, as well as an activity bar indicating how often you visit that site. Microsoft’s research also found that many surfers will open no more than five tabs at a time so the size of the tab bar has been reduced to reflect this. The amount of space given to a single tab is now proportional to the size of the screen.

Microsoft on Wednesday updated its rough-edged preview of Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), adding support for several crucial HTML5 standards and boasting that the browser is faster than ever.

Last updated seven weeks ago, the IE9 Platform Preview is not a full-fledged browser, but instead features a very bare bones interface wrapped around Microsoft’s newest rendering and JavaScript engines.

When Microsoft debuted IE9 in mid-March, the company committed to updating the IE9 preview approximately every eight weeks until it issues a public beta. Microsoft has not disclosed a release date for either a public beta or the final version of IE9.

The third preview released Wednesday introduces support for HTML5’s Canvas element — the tag lets site designers insert dynamic, scriptable rendering of 2D shapes and bitmap images into pages — as well as for hardware-accelerated audio and video tags.

Microsoft has pinned IE9’s attempt to match or surpass the speeds of rivals on the browser’s ability to offload text, image and video rendering chores to the computer’s graphics processor, dramatically increasing performance.

“This is the first browser that uses hardware acceleration for everything on the Web page, on by default,” said Dean Hachamovich, the browser’s general manager, in an entry on the IE blog.

The company also touted the preview’s improved JavaScript speed and Web standards test scores.

According to Microsoft, IE9 Platform Preview 3 completes the SunSpider JavaScript test suite almost 47% faster than its May predecessor, although it still lags behind production editions of Apple’s Safari 5 and Google’s Chrome 5 on Windows. Platform Preview 3 was more than 10 times faster at rendering JavaScript than 2009’s IE8, Microsoft said.

On the Acid3 benchmark, which checks how closely a browser follows certain Web standards, the IE9 Platform Preview 3 scored 83 out of a possible 100, a 22% improvement over Platform Preview 2.

Unlike production editions of IE, the preview runs alongside existing versions, such as IE7 on Vista or IE8 on Windows 7. Neither the Platform Preview or the final version of IE9 will run on Windows XP because the browser relies on APIs (application programming interfaces) built into Windows 7 and added to Vista and Server 2008 R2 in October 2009, but not available on the nearly nine-year-old XP.

IE has been in decline for years. Although that slide has occasionally stalled, Microsoft has lost 8.3 percentage points in the last 12 months. The most recent data from Web analytics firm Net Applications puts IE’s usage share at just under 59.8%, a record low.

Platform Preview 3 is a 16MB download, and can be obtained from Microsoft’s site.

Microsoft’s Russian branch publicly posted a screenshot of the new Internet Explorer 9 user interface, with a look into what users can expect as Microsoft tries to steal some of its lost marketshare back from rivals.

More than anything else, the screenshot shows a browser that attempts to offer a minimalistic user interface and leave as much room as possible for the Web sites. When combined with the browser’s hardware acceleration, the hope is to pave the way for Web sites that are as application-like as possible.

Microsoft declined to confirm the details Wednesday of what had been posted to its Russian site.

However, the look is consistent with what IE team member Ryan Gavin told CNET earlier this month about the planned appearance of IE9.

“The browser is the theater,” Gavin said in the interview. “We’re not the play.”

The browser appears to go as far as to allow people to pin certain sites to the desktop and open them in their own windows without any clear indication that they are using IE at all. According to Foley’s Bing translation of the Russian site, there will be certain sites that are “recognized” or “protected” and can be pinned to the taskbar and launched with their own icons.

Microsoft plans to release a beta of the browser at a Sep. 15 event in San Francisco, although this latest leak clearly steals some of the thunder. Up to now, Microsoft had offered several technical previews of the underlying engine, but had yet to show or talk in detail about how the browser would look.

The invitations for the event do mention “the beauty of the Web” and “unlocking the native Web”.

Until now, though, the focus had been on several key features of the browser’s engine, including the hardware acceleration capabilities, improved JavaScript engine, and broader support for HTML5 and other standards. Microsoft first showed those features at the Mix10 event in March in Las Vegas, though it had talked about hardware acceleration as far back as last November’s Professional Developer Conference.

The details on the Russian site reveal a browser that borrows much from Windows 7, including the ability to tear off browser tabs and have them “snap” to a particular part of the screen, similar to the way documents and applications already do in the latest version of Windows.

There is also a unified search and address bar, something already seen in Google’s Chrome. However, having learned from criticism of Google–as well as its own considerable issues with regulators–I’m hearing that Microsoft will make the choice of whether to let the bar suggest sites as you type a completely opt-in affair.

Site pinning and jumplists

Once a site is opened, content from that page can be ‘pinned’ to the Windows 7 Taskbar. You can drag the whole tab down to the Taskbar or just the site’s favicon. Once a site is pinned to the Taskbar, each icon creates a ‘jumplist’ – a menu relevant to that site. Hovering over an icon will bring up a menu with tasks, tools and options relevant to that site. For example, if you pin Hotmail, the jumplist will bring up individual links to each of your mail folders.

Some sites have partnered with IE9 so that notifications appear on the Taskbar. For example, if you have Facebook open and someone writes on your wall, a notification message will show up on that icon on the Taskbar. Similarly, on compatible sites, these icon thumbnails can have preview controls making it possible to play, rewind and pause entertainment from the Taskbar rather than having to view the content in a tab.
Speed

Microsoft claims that because IE9 links to both Windows 7 and the hardware of the PC, the browser – and surfing in general – becomes faster. Accessing sites from the Windows 7 Taskbar automatically cuts down the time it takes to get online when compared to opening the browser, waiting for it to load, searching for a site and surfing. Jumplists make this faster still by sending you to specific pages within sites and bypassing homepages and navigation bars.

In IE9, Microsoft uses the computer’s built-in GPU rather than its processor CPU to handle pictures, texts and content. This technique is known as hardware acceleration. It takes the strain off the CPU, freeing it up so that it can process requests quicker and make browsing faster.
Chakra JavaScript engine

IE9’s performance is similarly boosted by using Microsoft’s new Chakra JavaScript engine. Often, when developers make interactive features in websites, they use JavaScript to work with the Document Object Model of a web page. These two parts of the site work together to make pages more dynamic and interactive, but they don’t speak the same computer language so they need to be translated to one another. This process slows down site performance. Chakra has been made part of the IE9 browser, which now means it speaks the same language as the DOM, meaning IE9 can load your sites quicker.
Security

IE9 develops a number of the security features added in IE8 which, Microsoft claimed when it launched in March 2009, was the company’s ‘most secure browser ever’. For example, IE9 has built on the SmartScreen Filter from IE8, which prevents phishing attacks and malicious software by adding reputation information about downloaded files and URLs. The SmartScreen Filter looks at how many times a file has been downloaded – a large number suggests that it would be safe – or whether a particular URL is on any blacklists for hosting malicious content, for example. InPrivate Browsing and InPrivate Filtering also remain in IE9. The Add-on Performance Advisor scans add-ons every time the browser is opened and records how long each add-on takes to load. This will alert you to any add-ons that are slowing the browser down, as well as advising you about updates for add-ons.

Other browsers such as Firefox and Chrome have similar measures in place to prevent old and potentially unstable and dangerous add-ons and plug-ins from affecting the browser – by either blocking them or advising you to update them.

A total of 50 built-in stitches are programmed into this sewing machine including 5 styles of auto-sizing, 1-step buttonholes. The stitch selection covers decorative sewing, stretch stitches, quilting, and heirloom sewing. Stitch width is adjustable to 7mm and length adjustable to 5mm.

Comparing sewing machines often comes down to settling on a set of stitch patterns that will grow as your skills improve and your taste for more complex projects increases. The collection that comes with this machine has enough variety to accomplish all types of sewing with some very pretty designs.

Brother CE 5500PRW Presser Feet
There are a total of 7 snap-on presser feet included with the purchase of this sewing machine. The Zigzag foot has a leveler button for maneuvering over thick seams. Stored inside the flatbed of this machine you will find a Zigzag (general purpose) foot, a Buttonhole foot, an Overcasting foot, a Monogramming foot, the Zipper foot, a Blind Stitch foot and a Button Fitting presser foot.

Brother CE 5500PRW Features
Brother does a great job of packing as many automation features as possible into their machines – even this entry level Project Runway model.

The LCD screen used to monitor your stitch selection and settings is bright and easy to read. Four push buttons around the screen operate all of the machine’s stitch operations. There is an automatic needle threader to make getting the thread through the eye of the needle as easy as possible, a drop-in bobbin system, and a fast, automatic bobbin winder.

The six point feed dog system provides good fabric control and the machine handles even thick fabrics like layers of denim, tweed and canvas.

Top thread tension is adjustable. The needle has two possible positions – left and center so you can get close to the edge of your fabric. You can remove the flat bed for free-arm sewing and also drop the feed dogs so you can do a simple mending stitch or try your hand at free-motion quilting and embroidery.

You can perform twin needle sewing on this machine for parallel stitch lines. The work area is well lit. The reverse button is conveniently accessible. A built in handle at the top of the machine makes it easy to move around. A see through bobbin cover saves you from running out of bobbin thread in the middle of your stitch work.

For convenience, a large selection of supplied notions store in the flat bed attachment: seam ripper, 4 bobbins, 3 piece needle set, ball point needle, cleaning brush, screwdriver, spool caps, and an extra spool pin. A soft cover is included to keep your machine free of dust when not in use.

The Brother CE 5500PRW offers a lot of functionality for a very decent price. It’s worth considering if you are in the market for a new sewing machine.

CES 2011 To Feel Apple’s Absence

What do you call it when you have 120,000 people and an elephant in the room?

The International Consumer Electronics Show, which kicks off this week in Las Vegas.

The elephant is Apple Inc. It won’t be at the show this year, but its tablet computer, the iPad, is the most important new product for an industry that needs to once again excite consumers. Sales of the iPad have been strong since its April debut, and the whole industry is now trying to mimic Apple’s success.

With the iPad, Apple single-handedly cracked the code for the tablet, a device that dozens of manufacturers have tried to take to the masses for two decades, with little success.

Apple itself doesn’t do trade shows. When Apple has new products to reveal, such as iPads or iPhones, it stages its own events.

But nearly every other company in the industry will be there for CES, which runs Thursday to Sunday and is the largest trade show of any kind in the Americas. A good many of them will show off their tablets – computing slabs with touch-sensitive screens. Big names expected to do so include Motorola Inc. and Dell Inc.

DisplaySearch analyst Richard Semenza estimated that a hundred different tablet models are in development, though not all of them will reach store shelves.

Competing tablets will have a hard time catching up to Apple’s lead, at least this year. Certainly, no one managed to do so last year, even though a lot of manufacturers, including Dell, brought out tablets. Samsung did have some success with its Galaxy Tab, but sales didn’t come close to the iPad’s.

“For the next year or two, we expect there to be a lot of false starts, failed attempts, and disasters,” Richard Shim, another DisplaySearch analyst, said in a blog post.

“For the next year or two, we expect there to be a lot of false starts, failed attempts, and disasters,” Richard Shim, another DisplaySearch analyst, said in a blog post.

Story continues below Apple sold 7.4 million iPads through September, in the device’s first six months on sale. That means they’re already outselling Apple’s Mac computers, but not iPods or iPhones.

Analyst Shaw Wu at Kaufman Bros. believes Apple sold another 6.1 million iPads in the holiday quarter, and there’s every indication that it was a popular holiday gift. Even some retailers that don’t normally sell electronics, including TJ Maxx, carried the iPad.

Apple’s would-be competitors include Motorola, which has been hinting that it will show off its first tablet at the show. Dell and Acer Inc. are also expected to show tablets. Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer will likely touch on tablets in his keynote speech Wednesday, an annual fixture the eve of the show’s opening.

The electronics industry’s need for a hot new product is especially strong this year. Overall, the recent holiday season was the best for retailers since 2007, but electronics sales were up just 1.2 percent from the previous year, according to MasterCard SpendingPulse, which tracks spending across all transactions, including cash. They’re still down 10 percent from pre-recession levels.

For about five years, the industry has been bolstered by Americans rushing out to buy flat-panel TVs. Now, that rush is slowing, as 61 percent of households already have such sets, according to Leichtman Research Group.

Meanwhile, sales of other products that have driven growth, such as GPS units, picture frames and digital cameras, have tapered off. The people who really want them already have them, while the rest make do with their cell phones instead.

Other technologies that have been promoted at CES in recent years have been met with tepid interest from consumers.

At last year’s CES, Japanese and Korean TV makers showed off 3-D TVs as a way to keep consumers buying newer TVs. But when the sets hits stores a few months later, sales were disappointing. Samsung Electronics Co. estimates all manufacturers combined sold 1 million 3-D sets in the U.S in 2010, far short of its initial estimate of 3 million to 4 million.

This year, manufacturers aren’t giving up on 3-D, but some of them are likely to change their strategy to make 3-D viewing a bit more affordable and comfortable. Last year’s 3-D sets require bulky, battery-powered glasses, which cost about 0 a pair. This year, we’re likely to see more sets that use thin, unpowered glasses of the kind used in 3-D movie theaters. Vizio Inc., the No. 1 maker of LCD TVs for the U.S. market, already introduced one model with this kind of “passive” 3-D screen in December.

Aside from the benefit of cheaper glasses, the image flickers less with passive 3-D technology. On the other hand, it cuts the resolution in half. It’s still high-definition, but less so.

“Having convinced the world to adopt ‘Full HD’ TVs, someone is going to have to get creative to market ‘Half HD’,” Semenza said.

TV makers will also push Internet-connected TVs at CES.

“Basically, the TV will look like your smart phone and have access to the Internet,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, which organizes the show.

Internet-connected TVs have been around for several years and are starting to gain consumer interest now that they can display video from such online sources as Netflix Inc. and Hulu.com. Research firm NPD estimates that 12 percent of TVs sold in the U.S. were Internet-capable.

At the show, manufacturers are set to talk about TVs that are even “smarter,” with access to better downloadable applications for social networking and other tasks.

“This is going to be the year for … the first generation of truly smart TV applications, where people are building them for the first time unique to this platform,” said Eric Anderson, vice president of content and product solutions at Samsung Consumer Electronics America’s. Samsung has a nearly 60 percent market share of Internet-capable TVs sold in the U.S.

Apple is involved in connecting TVs to the Internet as well, through its Apple TV add-on box. But Apple’s isolation from the rest of the industry may be hurting it here. It hasn’t let anyone build its software into TVs, so its add-on box is competing with the software that comes free with many TVs.

Apple’s shadow also falls on the presence of Verizon Wireless, which will be at CES to show off the first phones for its next-generation wireless data network, known as 4G. The network was turned on in December and offers the highest data speeds yet, but only for sticks that plug into laptops.

Apple is widely expected to introduce a version of the iPhone for Verizon’s network this year, but indications are that it won’t happen at CES.

That leaves the CEO of Verizon Communications Inc., Ivan Seidenberg, to talk about other smart phones at his keynote presentation Thursday, while everyone will be thinking of the elephant in the room.

The Singer CE 150 Futura Embroidery and Sewing machine is appropriately named. It’s ergonomically placed control panel and wide, stable base look like something from the future.

Combination machines like this one provide easy entry into creative, decorative sewing.

The embroidery functionality relies on the hardware inside your own computer so while this is a computerized machine, there’s less built in programming than in some other combination machines so less chance for breakdown and more opportunity for flexibility and added designs.

Singer CE 150 Sewing Stitches
For sewing, there are 24 built in stitches with which you can accomplish most types of sewing. Make your own clothes, make great new home furnishings, and even take up quilting.

Although each stitch has a default width and length setting, some stitches can be modified to a maximum width of 7mm and a maximum length of 5mm. Included in the Singer CE 150 built in stitches are two one-step buttonholes – a narrow and a wide bartack style buttonhole.

Presser Feet
You get a total of seven presser feet with your purchase including the general purpose foot, zipper foot, button sewing, blind stitch, buttonhole, satin stitch, and the embroidery presser foot.

Presser feet snap into place easily. Push a little button and the current foot drops off. Slip the new one underneath the arm, lower the presser foot and the new one clicks right into place.

Singer CE 150 Futura Functionality
There are plenty of good things to say about the sewing side of this machine. It threads easily, has a top loading drop-in bobbin, is jam proof, has a see-through bobbin cover, the drop feed dog lever is conveniently located up front and there is an automatic needle threader.

Automatic thread tension
Horizontal thread delivery
Needle up/down button
Start/stop sewing button
Adjustable needle position
Twin needle capable

One unique feature is the Optimum Power Supply which redirects power as needed to get through thick fabrics and difficult seams.

Embroidery Functionality
The Singer CE 150 Futura must be connected to a computer to perform embroidery functions. Connection is made through a USB cord so it’s easy to reach between the two in almost any situation.

The provided basic software must be loaded onto your computer to control the embroidery functionality. It is the software that holds the provided 120 designs and 5 fonts. Additional software can be purchased for editing and manipulating patterns for really unique customization.

Other combination embroidery and sewing machines with similar capabilities can cost significantly more.

The accessories that come with the Singer CE 150 Futura can be stored right inside the extension arm and include needles, bobbins, screwdrivers, thread spools, scissors, two embroidery hoops, a USB cable and embroidery software.

Machine embroidery is a lot of fun and adds so much pizazz to your fabric crafts but combination machines often cost huge amounts of money. The Singer CE 150 Futura arrived at a unique solution by putting more reliance on your own computer so that they could offer an entry level machine for less.

Throw in local requirements for CE credits, and it’s a formula that’s likely to drive some to leave the industry altogether.

The problem with CE credits in the medical field is that although they can actually end up benefitting workers (and their patients) in the long run, the process of obtaining them can be rather burdensome. While some states mandate that CE credits be obtained while employees are on the job, in most cases, those who need to fulfill CE requirements will have to do so on their own time and at their own expense.

In fact, the onus of CE credits has caused many workers within the healthcare field to regard any type of mandatory training as a negative thing. This sentiment, for some, holds true when it comes to learning to use healthcare technology. These days, medical professionals have a variety of new and exciting tools at their disposal, from EHRs to remote monitoring devices. The problem, however, is that when it comes to healthcare technology training, employees tend to rebel, if not outwardly then at least internally. And when it comes to these types of initiatives, a bad attitude can render the training process relatively useless.

What’s the solution then? The answer is a simple one: By attaching CE credits to healthcare technology training, physicians can motivate their employees to approach the process in an open-minded fashion.

Offering CE credits to workers for technology training is actually a very effective staff retention strategy. After all, employees who feel appreciated are more likely to stick around in the long run than those who feel that their time isn’t valued. Additionally, by giving employees the opportunity to undergo training via eLearning—an option that represents the utmost in flexibility and convenience—those in charge of rolling out healthcare technology are less likely to be met with resistance on the part of nurses and administrative staff members who will actually need to use these tools on a regular basis.

Furthermore, by attaching CE credits to healthcare technology training, providers can motivate their employees to actually want to learn. This will result in their workers’ ability to utilize their new tools more efficiently and, in turn, yield a greater return on their technological investments.

Since implementing technology into a medical practice is no easy task, providing CE credits to employees offers a win-win situation for all involved, from doctors to workers to patients looking for more options and a better experience overall. So rather than compel employees to undergo training in a manner that is stress-inducing and overwhelming, physicians should offer them the opportunity to learn something new in a manner that yields them the credits they need to keep on doing their jobs.
